Popular Fly Fishing Locations
Where are some choice spots for fly
fishing in North America?
Worldwide, there are lots of great spots
for fly fishing. You just have to know where to
look. For trips inside of the United States, Alaska and
Colorado really can't be beat. For trips on the North
American continent in general, you might consider Canada as a
wonderful option for your vacation, considering the vast scope
of the country and its fly fishing destinations. Here are
just a few reasons as to why you should take a look at each of
these most popular places to visit for anglers, and why each
and every one has its own charms.
Colorado is one of the best
places in the continental United States to enjoy the sport of
fly fishing, especially if you’re a lover of trout. In
fact, the state is known for its world-class trout fishing, and
many of its gold medal streams boast enormous trophy
fish. Whether you’re a flowing water or a still water
enthusiast, you’ll find something to enjoy here – but
unfortunately for the salt water fisherman, it's
landlocked! Still, any angler will find something to love
in the down-home lodging and comfortable, warm-hearted
service...and if not, you're sure to love the convenience of
easy access from most campgrounds to choice fishing spots along
rivers and lakes.
For fishing still in the
United States, if not in the lower 48, you truly must consider
Alaska, which has more fishing spots than an angler can
possibly visit in a lifetime. After all, there are more
than three thousand bodies of flowing water in Alaska, ranging
from gently babbling streams to roaring whitewater rivers,
depending upon what kind of terrain you’re making base camp
near. Sport fishermen (and women!) can find all of the
exciting opportunities here that many could ever dream of –
from Arctic char to steelhead, trout to bass, to even the
amazing salmon, which migrates in the millions back to the
places where they were spawned. And, of course, there is
the saltwater fly fishing route. Saltwater fishing locations
along the state’s nearly sixty thousand miles of coastline are
relatively unexplored, but if you have the guts and the
ingenuity to go after steelhead, salmon and other big fish in
conditions that many people would consider inhospitable...you
are to be congratulated!
Then, of course, there is
Canada. Vast, open in places, populated in others, rife
with splendid natural beauty and some genuinely good people,
this is a veritable fisherman's paradise. Rivers, lakes,
streams, and prime angling spots along the coasts abound, no
matter where you’re interested in heading. Large fish
feed at the surface in the rivers of British Columbia and the
streams of New Brunswick. The Skeena River of
British Columbia is a picturesque place of untouched natural
beauty, unspoiled by the release of farm-raised fish, and
defended fiercely by the local anglers against the encroachment
of aquaculture. The Crowsnest River in Alberta and
Ontario's Grand River both boast trout of different species
that, compared to their cousins in American waters, are
mammoth.
Wherever you decide to take
your fly fishing adventure, you’re bound to have a great time
as long as you give it a little bit of thought and plan your
days. Best of luck and happy angling!
