Fly Fish and Fly Fishing

Fly Fishing in Colorado

Colorado is one of the consummate places in the United States to enjoy the sport of fly fishing, especially if you’re a lover of trout.  In fact, the state is known for its world-class trout fishing, and many of its gold medal streams boast enormous trophy fish.  Whether you’re a flowing water or a still water enthusiast, you’ll find something to enjoy here – but unfortunately for the salt water fisherman, the state is landlocked!

No matter what, we’re sure that you’ll fall in love with Colorado’s rugged beauty, rich natural resources, and abundant flora and fauna.  When you’re done sightseeing, be prepared for some of the most challenging and affordable fly fishing in the continental US.

Anglers young and old alike can come to Colorado and enjoy the sport without worry – relative newbies to the sport can get a great introduction with one of many classes available at any number of riverside and lakeside lodges, with competent instructors and great scenery!  The combination of the Rocky Mountains and low, rolling plains in the state lends itself to opportunities you wouldn’t believe.

With names like Cache La Poudre, Animas, Fryingpan, Gunnison, Uncomphagre and Yampa, you would expect for Colorado’s many rivers to be terrifying and unreachable, but we’re happy to tell you that is not the case.  Roughly six thousand miles of streams carve their way through the state, punctuated by about two thousand lakes and ponds as well as, of course, the occasional reservoir.

A lot of excellent fishing spots are accessible by ATV, by backpacking, or by four wheel drive vehicles.  What’s more, your fishing species are not limited to just cold- or warm-water fish – in fact, there are about eighty different species that you can catch, which gives you an excellent chance at hooking a trophy animal.

From walleye in the warm, meandering plains rivers to the famous rainbow trout in rushing Rocky Mountain streams, you’re sure to find the place that’s right for you, especially with the number of state parks, national parks, and national forests available.  Many campgrounds in those locations even have convenient access for anglers, right along choice sections of water.  You can enjoy fly fishing on the mighty Colorado or Rio Grande Rivers or even on the South Platte River, which is classified as yet another gold medal location – an angler’s dream come true.

Bring the family.  Bring the kids!  They’ll have fun in this fisherman’s paradise and so will you.
