Fly Fish and Fly Fishing

Fly Fishing Techniques

Fly fishing is a sport people enjoy because it offers solitude and a closeness with nature. The unique thing about fly fishing is that you don’t have to use organic bait. Instead, artificial flies are attached to the hook and line. There are many helpful fly fishing techniques that can be used in order to become a successful fly fisherman.

Fly fishing is an angling method used mainly for catching trout or salmon. However, these days fly fishing is also used to catch a variety of species of fish such as pike, bass and types of marine species.

The lure, or “fly” is used to mimic insects such as flies and comes in a variety of colors.

A major cause of failure for fly fishermen is not realizing the importance of how a fly approaches a fish. Cast the line into the water, use jerky movements on or above the water’s surface to shake the fly. This fly fishing technique is suppose to mimic the movements of an insect. These lures were originally made out of fur or feathers and were attached to a line called a “trippet”.

Flies are used to imitate natural food items. There are many types of flies such as nymphs, wet flies, dry flies and streamers. Dry flies are used to resemble insects like grasshoppers, dragonflies, etc. Wet flies, also known as streamers, are generally used to resemble minnows or leeches.

Great fly fishing techniques are used when casting the line and how to cast the line. With other types of fishing you rely on the bait to attract the fish, but with fly fishing you need more expertise in order to lure the fish.

Dead drifting is another fly fishing technique, this is used when casting upstream and using the current to drift the fly downstream. The fly floats at the same speed as the water. When drifting in this manner, it appears natural to the fish. Once the fly is dead drifting flick the line upstream, halt any drag created by the current and pulling is downstream, to keep the fly drifting at the appropriate speed. Sometimes you won’t be able to see where you fly is, try looking for the end of your line and expect it to be there.

Wet fly fishing includes casting the fly line downstream across the river. This is one of the fly fishing techniques that is called the basic method, a great use for a beginner angler. This method is very simple to do, follow the fly downstream with the fly rod, at the same time keep the rod tip pointed at the wet fly. The current of the river will swing the fly across the river, this will imitate a swimming insect. The angler can twitch the rod or fly line to give the fly more action.

Once the fly hangs directly downstream from the angler, the tip of the rod should be slightly raised. This will raise the fly from the depths of the river and twitch, this can prevoke a strike.

Another thing to remember when you're fly fishing try to remain as quiet as you can. You do not want to spook the fish and you don't want to disturb other fly fishers.

It takes time and skill to become a good fly fisherman, but with these wonderful fly fishing techniques, you’ll be a pro in no time.
